Wow.
Because I decided to watch EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY for the first time in...ohhhh fifteen years or so...I learn that Camp Rock was written by Julie Brown. Weeeeeeeeird.

Soooo basically we have a Julie Brown/Kara DioGuardi collaboration here. And I still have a feeling it's gonna suck.

for the first time in years, i'm saying, "write and call you senator".
i know it's friday and it's the weekend, but if you have a minute, please check this out and pass it along to anyone you know who might be interested as well.

you all know i'm not a big believer in letter-writing campaigns, but i'm trying to be hopeful. also - this is something that is very important to me - i can attest to how stigmatization and embarrassment and frankly WRONG material can happen when hospitals obtain mental health information that is out of date, or not relevant any longer - and is really a violation of my privacy rights. (different hospitals, no written consent, etc. where's HIPPA when you need it?)

the thought of this information being at the hands of future employers, etc. is probably me catastrophizing. but even the idea that a doctor i could see might be able to pull up a record from someone random who gave me a diagnosis i don't believe - and that my every-day doctors don't agree with - is mildly upsetting, especially because different diagnoses are stigmatized within the medical community itself.

please take a minute to read the information, and if you want to, send an e-mail/letter to your senator. feel free to link back here or post in your own journal. the concept behind HIT should be applauded, but it should err on the side of caution before being put into practice.

things TV can stop teaching us
I started this list a while back, but I know I'm missing some big ones (in fact, someone on my flist pointed out a good one a couple days ago; was it you?). But here are some things TV really likes to teach us, over and over, and it's time for us to let TV know we got it now. For example.

Fugu. Stop explaining it to us; we know how it works now.
We can identify both a caduceus and an ouroboros.
We've got a handle on the gum disease known as gingivitis.

There are adjuncts to "things TV can stop teaching us" which is "things TV can stop doing," like:

The obvious hospital show rule: It's not lupus. (It is, however, acute intermittent porphyria, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, or Wilson's Disease...)
It's time to stop naming your heroes Jack.
The pedophile did it.

And more? I'm missing an important one off the first list ([info]projectjulie, what was it???) and there's obviously a bunch more for the second list. Spit 'em!

//

Elsewhere it's 101 degrees and after schlepping around in my car all afternoon I am now in my air-conditioned bedroom to respond to e-mails and eventually watch a Hamlet or two.

This spring TV season is really spoiling me with all my favorite shows managing to be on the air at the same time -- thank you, strike. This year I'm watching HIMYM, Bones, NCIS, BSG and Doctor Who, with the occasional Office, and frequently 30 Rock and Scrubs. I also just mainlined the first half of S4 of Top Chef (yay!).

And it's springtime, with promises of a pretty decent summer season too. The upfronts don't look particularly enthralling for next year (Life on Mars: US!, um, WTF, you make Viva Laughlin look like a good remake) -- with the exception of the return of The Electric Company -- but then, I can't think about anything beyond the first week in August right now.

I was also going to say something about HBO's "Recount," which is on... next week? But now I fear it'll actually get me into a political argument about this year's election and I am so not feeling that right now.

spoilers for Doctor Who, Bones, HIMYM, Top Chef )

ALSO. Thank you to everyone who went to the trouble of reading and commenting on my Doctor/Master fic. I am feeling much less whiny and in fact full of real glee that people actually read this complicated, difficult story. I know it's not the sort of thing that can be easily responded to with an "awesome!" as it's NOT, necessarily, but it's definitely something, and you people have helped me figure that out and come to terms with it, and with my niche in fandom, etc. So anyway, here it is with all its flaws. It's not really slash, not really kinky, no sex, some emo power play, and first-person-Doctorpov with Simm!Master in that missing TSoD year. Very niche, very skippable for most. And the truth is there's lots of stuff, in this and other fandoms, that I skip too, all the time.

So, is there a distinctively American bosh?
So, is there a distinctively American equivalent to bosh? Seems to me that snap and bubblecrunk and Houston's screwed 'n' chopped thing and whatever it is they call the stuff from Memphis all have potential but are probably too not-completely unearnest underneath and just not hysterically boshin' enough. The closest to a bosh equivalent might be juke. Or maybe if you sped up Miami bass.

But bosh is more embracing than I think juke is.

I'm a big polaroid fan, although I have never owned a polaroid camera. I've been working with both digital and analogical devices, and I decided it is time to get a polaroid camera. I know very little about these kind of cameras, but I do know there is some trouble getting one because they are discontinued. I had visited some photography stores and online sites, but I am not sure what should I get. Should I get the old fashioned SX-70? I am in love with that camera, but there are some paper issues with it. Or should I get something else? What would you recommend?

Thanks a lot.

The Friday Five for 16 May 2008
This week's questions have been brought to you by [info]heartovmidnight, the letter F, & the number 5...

TV Time!
  1. What's your favourite TV network?
  2. If you could create your own channel, what would it be?
  3. What TV show did you watch as a child, that you wish they would bring back?
  4. What show have you always hated, and wonder why they ever made such a dumb show?
  5. What TV show's seasons would you buy on DVD?
    (sic)
