I want to go to this RIGHT NOW.
Hey, who wants to see "Design and the Elastic Mind" or "Color Chart" at MoMA? ("Color Chart" has an interactive playroom! But "Elastic Mind" is all brain-y! I still need to go to Liberty Science Center! I've decided that I need to stop saying to people, "Yeah, we should do blah blah blah" and letting the conversation end there, because the blah blah blah never gets done. I am just going to start deciding when we're doing shit, and then you will get a phone call notifying you of the plan, like when the dentist calls to remind you of your appointment.)

Does anyone have a child I can borrow so I can go to the Hall of Science? And/or does anybody want to go to Liberty Science Center with me? (ZOMG they have a special exhibit on race! I want to goooooo!)

Leave your email address in the comments, or send me a message at girlboymusic[at]gmail[dot]com, and I will help you. Thx.

PS - The only available version of Kara singing "Now You Know" is the one you hear in A Cinderella Story: one verse, one chorus, with the dialogue over it and everything.

I know approximately nothing about the business of music publishing (and the business of publishing in general, ironically), so can anyone explain this to me?

Hit songwriter Kara DioGuardi is putting her copyright interests up for sale, Billboard.biz has learned. On the auction block are all of her rights, including her writer's share, in songs she's written and co-written through June 30 of this year, sources say.

The whole article.

The Linea Pelle Dylan Messenger Bag.

Pros: Look at it! The leather is gorgeous and ages really nicely, and I don't have an...angel-colored bag yet. It is made of angels!

Cons: It's $375. Kind of ginormous. Also, what goes with angel?

The Banana Republic Ashbury Hobo.

Pros: I have wanted this bag for years. The last time they had it, I hesitated because I hadn't broken the $150 barrier on a bag yet, and then it was gone and I had to hunt for it on eBay, and it was like ninety million dollars unless I wanted to buy the nylon version, which, whatever. The leather is way nicer this time around, too. Key fob! Inner pocket so I won't have to keep my MP3 player in a mitten anymore! It's $298.

Cons: Only available in brown, and I already have a brown bag. And brown bags are a dime a dozen! I really want it in black! Brown is stupid! Angel is a lot prettier.

like a batsignal for nerds
Calling all nerds!

Does anyone know anything about PHP? I'm trying to build an application form for a fanlisting, and so far I've tried Jack's Formmail, CodeGrrl's NL-PHPMail, this really simple random code, and both an edited and unedited Bravenet form. None of them are able to redirect to my thanks page after submitting the form. Jack's Formmail and Bravenet both display what they're supposed to display if there's no redirect page specified, while CodeGrrl and the simple random code display a bunch of mashed-up code. Additionally, the CodeGrrl PHP conversion code gives me a bunch of mashed-up code too.

So, it must be my server, right? These can't all be defective. But this is the extent of my experience with PHP, so I don't even know where to start looking for problems. My server provides Mod PHP 5.1.2, and the test page looks all right.

wednesday

Originally uploaded by girlboymusic.
At right: They're filming something called My Sassy Girl down the street. I was really hoping it was a porn.

For the past few weeks, I've been working all 5 days, because we're busy and the Boss asked me to. Which, like, awesome, I got to do all my holiday shopping on the weekends with everyone else in the world! Fantastic! This certainly was not the one time of year when I actually needed to be home midweek! But whatever, money is money.

Then on Tuesday, the Boss comes strolling by, and she's all scarfed up because she's on her way out to lunch, so I can tell it's just an afterthought as she sidesteps into my office. Mad managerial skillz!

The Boss: "By the way, the Big Boss would like you to go back to 3 days a week. Sorry."
Me: "I already am, so...no problem?"
The Boss: (apologetic)
Me: "No, really, no problem. I only came in because you asked me to, so..."

And then I got another demonstration of her inability to remember two weeks ago, wherein she was like, "I asked you to?" and acted like coming in 5 days was all my illegal idea. Fine.

And then comes Wednesday. )

"what's this? it says...ip-odd?"
I am considering joining the iPod nation. (Once you go Mac, you never go back.) My pro/con list:

PROS:
- superior customer service (compared to Zen Micro)
- to the best of my knowledge, the iPod Nano does not cause cancer (Zen Micro? Not so sure.)
- supposedly compatible with both PC and Mac (unlike Zen Micro)
- free laser engraving! ("hi, my name is buckingham")

CONS:
- 8GB Nano only comes in black and red
- regular iPod (in preferable white) is GINORMOUS! (compared to Zen Micro)
- built-in battery (no spares!)
- questionable compatibility with old-ass PCs
- CLICKWHEEEL!

I loved my first Zen Micro, it survived a lot before its fatal fall from my bookshelf, the touchpad is far superior to the stupid clickwheel, the ability to battery-swap is a lifesaver, and, to be fair, the cancer thing is just a Prop 65 warning, so...whatever. But the shitty customer service is kind of a dealbreaker for me. (The Zen Micro's inability to communicate with Macs is also a worry, but less so--even if I go Mac, I'm always going to have access to a PC.)

Any advice? Do any of you have pre-2004 PCs that have been able to handle the new Nano? My computer has USB problems to begin with, and I sometimes have to transfer songs from my computer to my MP3 player by sharing my music folder on the network and accessing it via my mother's computer--would iPod/iTunes be able to do that?

and by "love" I do not mean "zero"
Every year at about this time, I discover a deep love for tennis and/or James Blake. The problem is, for me, watching tennis is sort of like listening to Alizee: I love it, but I have no idea what's going on. Love, 15, 30, 40, game, right? And a match is all the games played, and a set is...somewhere in between there? Can anybody direct me to a good, simple guide to tennis for viewers? Thanks.

he's pretty when he's angry! plus: giving is good!
Anderson Cooper is so passionate! Seriously, though, somebody needs to just step up and say, "You know, we fucked up." Honestly. There is something to be said for stepping up and saying you're sorry. This on-air act that everything is fine and everything is being done--it's only going to make people angrier and more desperate.

Also: some dude is donating a dollar to the Red Cross for every comment he receives is now broke thanks to all of you. He can't donate any more, so you should pony up!

Also also: Now might be a good time to sell your old crap for charity. Some worthy causes (rebuild libraries! help puppies in need!) can be found at [info]call_to_action.

Also also also: Coinstar machines can donate your spare change to the Red Cross. Find the Coinstar machine nearest you.

Also also also also: TWoP is teaming up with Donors Choose to raise money for "Classroom Care Packages" for students displaced by the storm. For every $2,000 they raise, the good folks at TWoP will let a recapper recap something "weird and wonderful," so we all win, really.
